It’s official. A few weeks ago Justin & I were sealed in the Washington DC Temple. Aside from the 95 degree weather that felt like 105 degrees. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect.
I wanted to take this opportunity to spotlight our AMAZING wedding photographer and friend, Alyssa Saylor of Alyssa Saylor Photography who is responsible for all of the stunning pictures below.
I met Alyssa at a photography workshop I attended 2 years ago in Asheville North Carolina. I think we both came in search of similar things and I felt immediately drawn to her. During a portion of the workshop we each shared some of our own work and I fell in love with her vintage inspired photography style and knew that when/if I ever got married I wanted her to do our pictures. In fact, after we got engaged and set the date, with all the arrangements that needed to be made, the first thing and BEST THING I did was contact Alyssa. It was an answered prayer that she was available on our date and made the trip in from Tennessee to photograph our wedding! A HUGE and unexpected bonus was that another girl we met at that workshop, Jenny Carroll (as ever photography), came in from Utah as a second shooter. SO AWESOME!!
They did an amazing job taking control of and managing our HUGE families and wedding party, while still capturing the special moments and little details happening all around. Here are some of the images we’ll cherish forever.
It’s been a long while since I’ve posted so I thought I’d pop on to share some exciting news and fun new pictures. I’m engaged!
We’ve set a quick date for this September and are hustling to get arrangements made and invitations in the mail. We wanted to include an engagement photo but each time we’d set out to take pictures they just never seemed right. I SOOOOOO prefer to be behind the camera and not in front of it and it was getting more and more apparent with each shoot we did. They all seemed so stiff and awkward. I seemed so stiff and awkward rather.
I finally realized for me to loosen up I was going to have to change the feel of the shoot to be something less formal and more fun…the problem was I WANTED the pictures to feel formal. Getting married is a big deal. Anyway, here’s what we came up with.
Justin was a great sport about this shoot…and every other shoot preceding this one, that I made him do, in search of the perfect images. I couldn’t be happier with the results. Not very traditional…but neither are we. I love them.
Funny unexpected side note: So many people mistook our wedding announcement as an announcement that we were expecting (until they READ it of course). In hindsight I can see how blue and pink cotton candy could be misleading. I see an exciting birth announcement in our future though!
This shoot is a little surreal. You might remember my friends Mckell & Brandon from their engagement pictures taken just last year. Recently they shared their exciting news that a little one is on the way. What a whirlwind the last year has been. The weather has been so gorgeous lately we had to get out and take advantage of it…even though her belly is just itty bitty and I swear I had to photoshop it bigger in some of these images. : )
I love these two. I could not happier for them…or for myself with these awesome images we got. : ) Really some of my favorites!
How charming is this place? This is The Historic Brigman House in Asheville North Carolina where I got to spend a few days with some very inspiring and incredible women.
I was a little starstruck when Joy & her husband Donnie first introduced themselves. The workshop started right off the bat with a themed family photo shoot which was a great way to break the ice and to just get us going. I loved the simple authentic ways she styled everyone so the theme carries through while not being overdone or getting too costume-y.
I loved watching Joy interact with the family and learning how she keeps it moving while getting very natural, expressive, and emotional images. It was really fascinating. Here are some of my favorites.
Here are some from the photo shoot she set up on day 2.
It wasn’t just amazing shoot after amazon shoot. There was also a lot of talking and sharing. I was blown away by how open Joy was about EVERYTHING. From business and starting up to getting inspiration, dealing with difficult clients, photo shoot nightmares, her editing process, insecurities, personal goals and much more. She was incredible. I was actually blesses to meet several incredible and very very talented women this week. It already feels like a dream.
The eve has come! Tomorrow I leave for Asheville North Carolina to attend the workshop of one of my favorite photographers ever, the renowned and highly sought after, Joy Harmon Prouty of Wildflowers Photography; featured in/by Parenting Magazine, The Maternal Lens, Reverie Blog, and Access Hollywood as she’s the choice family photographer of celebs including Minnie Driver.
I’ve been following her worked for a couple years now and am continually inspired and constantly in awe of the creativity she brings as well as the beauty, whimsy, and “freeness” (is that a word?) she so effortlessly captures in her sessions. See for yourself in these images of hers from just a few of my favorite sessions.
WHAAAAAT!!!?? I’m sure now you can understand both why tonight feels like Christmas Eve and why I’ve been acting like a giddy child counting down the days. From delving into the “how to’s” of creating themed shoots that really tell a story, to exploring the antique shops of Asheville, to gaining insights into better balancing it all, I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow! So excited!
Tune in soon for pictures from the Wildflowers Workshop and our themed shoots, including a “cowboys & Indians” family session!!
AHHHHH!! I’m never gonna fall asleep tonight
Generally I try not to have overwhelming amounts of images and/or scrolling involved in any single post but since I can’t bear to eliminate a single additional image from these storyboards this time is going to be an exception, as was my last post about Penny. : ) It seriously just took me over an hour to narrow the original number of pictures I wanted to include in this post, to these 19 (which I know is still a crazy number considering it’s just shy of the total amount I typically edit and present following a shoot) but you’ll see why its been so hard in a second…
Recently I had the opportunity to do something I’ve been wanting to do for quite a while and that is shoot one of my bestie’s little sister, who begins her senior year next week! Thanks to her fresh style, fun easy going personality and willingness to not only do anything but let me dress her in anything, including my grandpa’s old belt, not to mention her beautiful blonde hair, huge expressive brown eyes, and sweet smile, the images she gave me were better than I’d ever hoped for. Thanks Samantha, you’re a stunner!
She’s not a tiny little newborn anymore…wow how time flies. Just 12 short months ago I got this shot which immediately became the front of my newborn session business cards and remains one of my favorite images to this day. [See more from Penny’s Newborn Session] As you’ll see in the not 1, not 2, but 3 storyboards below, that cover the pre and post aspects of a cake shoot along with the mess in between, she has gotten sweeter and sweeter with each passing day and still delivers shot after show stopping shot with her angelic, expressive, and precious little face…and personality!
After convincing me they really really would not have any use for the tin tub that they’d just purchased the day before to use in this shoot they let me pack it into my trunk and bring it home to join my prop collection!! So book your tub shoots now!! Can’t wait!
I have been very busy lately. Too busy. This week I took a quickie break from the pressing workload to spend some time with and spoil one of my favorite people in this world. My niece Gia. I am so glad I was able to sneak away for a bit to not only capture her sweetness in this summertime sunshine but to have her joyful smile uplift and energize me – the way it always seems to and in the way only IT can. Thanks my sweet G.
This was actually an unplanned and nearly spontaneous shoot believe it or not. About 2 hours before we planned on meeting to hit up the local fair I had a thought…we should try and get some fun carnival type shots, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. To my delight Emily was game and Daniel, being the stud he is, was willing. : ) Despite the masses of people and multiple times I was yelled at for taking pictures on rides, blocking the lines and/or exit ramps, we still got some fun shots before the sun went down and we were escorted from the park(just kidding).
Here’s to supportive, willing, awesome, fun, gorgeous and GREAT friends! Thanks guys!
After weeks and weeks of postponing this session due to majorly uncooperative weather…we did it!! Originally having big plans to head to the gorgeous Meadowlark botanical gardens facility, we switched it up and met at Vienna’s new Pavilion area, Vienna on the Green, where any given day you can go there to enjoy a book, beautiful scenery, ice cream, and live music.
Considering this is where they’ve laid their roots and watched their family grow. We thought the simple and stunning park in the heart of downtown Vienna, would be a more fitting location for their final family portrait, before kids begin heading off to college this fall and the next phase of their family begins. I’m so glad we did and really love how this special time is now captured in a special place. The familiar heart of “their town”.
This last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting up with one of my favorite families to do some summer portraits capturing this memorable time in their young family’s journey as sweet Penny rounds the final corner and will be turning one in just a couple months! We met at frying pan park on a beautifully sunny afternoon. Though we were a little worried since the sun was scalding and we were nearing Penny’s nap time, in the end the backlight was beautiful and Penny was perfect. So…as is always the case with this clan, the final product was more than I could have hoped for.
Talk about a champ. Little Sy, several weeks outside the 4-10 day window recommended for newborn sessions, was a delight! Even after stripping him down and dressing him in hat after hat, he was still all smiles and eventually even gave us some of the precious sleeping pictures we’d hoped for!
A much anticipated arrival has finally come! From this first set of pictures you can see that this little one had an entire army waiting in the wings to meet him, the sweet boy they’d been loving for the last 9 months(but it you ask me I’d say they’ve loved him much longer than that).
From this second set of images you can see both his sweetness and cuteness far surpassed what any of us could have imagined. My favorites of the entire session definitely being any and all where the lion hat is in play. I’d been holding off on using that hat knowing when baby Brady came he would turn it out…and as you can see, he did not disappoint.
I just can’t get enough of this baby mama’s style…as I’m sure you all fell in love with as well when you saw her Maternity Shoot. This simple and natural in home setting gives such an intimate feel that really speaks to me. Though the shoot is essentially prop free the images have such a cozy and precious outcome. I couldn’t love them or this little guy more! Can you even stand his little nose and lips! Too precious!
I’ve never thought of a necktie as being an oversized article of clothing, until we put one on a 10 day old baby that is. We thought it would be fun to put little J in one of his daddy’s many ties. I couldn’t believe how the tie appeared to just keep going and going forever when it laid beside his tiny body. I really started thinking this had to be the longest tie I’d ever seen in my life…so long in fact it didn’t fit in the frame. I was assured it was a normal sized tie and suppose it’s all just relative to the fact that little man is so teeny and precious. How do we start out so small?
Funny that just a couple months ago I was thinking to myself “man, I’ve done tons of newborn sessions with little girls but so few with baby boys.” No sooner than that crossed my mind 4 newborn sessions were booked and ALL BOYS!! Needless to say things have been pretty busy for me lately. Just a couple sneak peaks for now but here are some of the precious newborn sessions to be looking for in the next week or so!
Looking through my viewfinder I honestly could not get over this Seniors resemblance to Justin Timberlake. Uncanny! And would you believe when I that thought with him that he informed me he’d never been told that before! Not a bad doppleganger if you ask me!
Nick was super fun and easy to shoot, which is never expected when you’re working with a teenage boy. Funny though that with all the shots I take, my favorites are always the close crops on the face where you can really see their eyes sparkle. This shoot was no exception.
